How Emerging Technology will Change our World
Emerson Hall 210 (Harvard Yard)
Tech is woven into the fabric of our lives and is constantly changing. How should we be thinking about emerging technologies—not only the excitement engendered by the possibilities but also the pragmatic view of their shortcomings and dangers? This interactive session will explore technologies like CRISPR, 5G, blockchain, and artificial intelligence will impact our business, communities and the environment and what we as leaders can do to prepare for the coming change. Come ready for a discussion of what we want our society to look like and how we will use technology to reflect our vision.
Journalism
Emerson Hall 105 (Harvard Yard)
Public watchdogs or “enemies of the people?” Even before President Trump branded the press “fake news,” the rise of hyper-partisan media, internet hoaxes, and tribal politics fueled a level of distrust unseen 30 years ago. Join journalist classmates who’ve covered Washington, the world, and local news for TV, radio, and newspapers for behind-the-scenes stories in the era of disputed facts. We’ll also discuss surprising new data showing what makes people trust the news.
3:30–5:00 PM
Change-making, Service and Social Impact
Emerson Hall 105 (Harvard Yard)
We all want a better world. But what does that mean, and what’s the best way to make it happen? We’ve gathered classmates exploring and addressing these issues in their lives, globally and locally, working with nonprofits, government, and private enterprise. Join us for self-reflection, discussion of what service to our society looks like in 2018, and an invitation to join in positive impact as a class over the next decades.
Aging: Managing Our Families and Ourselves
Emerson Hall 210 (Harvard Yard)
As we approach mid-life, we are confronted with more reminders we are not indestructible. Moreover, many of us have become caretakers for our parents and older relatives. This panel explores different aspects of aging, both for us and our loved ones.

Policy making: Finding Veritas and Understanding in the “No Compromise” Era
Science Center Hall C
In a world increasingly defined by tribalism and where facts don’t seem to matter, how do we better support and lead productive civic discourse and policymaking? The “civil” part of discourse seems to have gone by the wayside along with fact-based analysis and nuance in policy-making. Can we make a difference?
Professional Pivots at Mid-Career
Science Center Hall D
We entered the workforce before the Internet revolution, and we faced the Great Recession right in the prime of our careers. Depending on one's perspective, our career opportunities are much more expansive—or much more limited—than we could have dreamt on Commencement Day in June 1988. Many of us responded by 'pivoting' in mid-career. A diverse group of our classmates will speak candidly about their pivots, including addressing such issues as: what motivated them to take the leap? What unexpected challenges did they face? What was the key to making the pivot succeed? How did family and peers react? And how did the 'Harvard' on their diplomas make the decision to pivot easier or harder?
3:05–4:15 PM
Classmate Panel Discussions (Glimpses)
Sanders Theatre, Memorial Hall
In the last thirty years, we have collected an incredible array of experiences. Some have been tragic; others have been unbelievably joyful or simply unexpected. Kim Avila, Jose Cerda, Christopher Chang, Edi Pasalis, Manu Radhakrishnan, and Edna Yeh will give us a glimpse into their lives. This panel provides snapshots from classmates and will encourage others in the audience to ask questions and to give us a glimpse into their lives as well.
